We continue our look back at the Top 10 Stories of 2008 with a wreck that shocked the community and caused heartbreak for so many.
Three teens who lost their lives on August 3rd at the intersection of Boonville Road and Copperfield Drive in Bryan comes in second on the list
In the early hours of August 3, three teens' last trip, was recorded on dash-cam video.
"When he got back up to the last curve right here, he saw the vehicle actually go airborne here at the intersection where the driver lost control of it," said Bryan Police Chief Ty Morrow, describing the video.
The vehicle hit a tree and burst into flames. Inside, was 15-year-old Alex Dickey of Bryan, her boyfriend, 16-year-old Dillon Benavides of Normangee and his 18-year-old brother Gus Benavides.
"It's hard for all of us who knew all three of them because we didn't lose just one friend," said Kaylyn Plagens. "We lost all three friends. I mean they were like family."
The group was driving away from a Sweet 16 party in Park Meadows, where alcohol was served. Officers found a keg in the charred remains of their vehicle, and police later learned the vehicle's driver, Dillon Benavides, had a blood alcohol level one-and-a-half times the legal limit.
While friends turn the crash site into a memorial, Bryan Police used the scene to warn others.
"If this public service announcement can reach just one kid or one teenager or one adult and have them think about what they're doing before they climb behind the wheel or a car after drinking, then it's well worth the time spent," said Morrow.
Meanwhile, the investigation into who brought alcohol to the Sweet 16 party continued.
Warrants are issued for Alex Dickey's brother, Wayne Dickey Jr, and Jimmy Louis Noey Jr.
Both are later convicted of making alcohol available to a minor, a Class A misdemeanor.
In September, Noey was sentenced to one year in the Brazos county jail and had to pay a $4,000 fine, for bringing a keg to the party.
Dickey was sentenced to 45 days in jail -- time he had already served -- for purchasing wine coolers for another underage party-goer.
