A 12-year-old boy accused of killing his father by shooting him in the back is on trial this week in Houston.
The judge closed the trial to the public to protect the boy's interests. Those involved in the case can't comment because of a gag order. It was unclear whether testimony might begin Tuesday.
Investigators say the boy was 10 when he shot his father, Dr. Rick Lohstroh, through the back of the driver's seat. Lohstroh had been picking up his sons at the home of his ex-wife in Katy.
The boy's mother, Deborah Geisler, is not charged in the case. She has acknowledged keeping the semiautomatic pistol that killed her ex-husband in a zippered case inside her closet.
The boy has been in custody for almost two years. He was moved from lockup to the psychiatric facility of the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center.
