A College Station elementary teacher received a top honor Wednesday.
Maureen Haggerty with South Knoll Elementary was named elementary school teacher of the year for Region 6.
Haggerty went up against 55 other elementary teachers across the region and she will now be in the running for state teacher of the year.
Haggerty has taught special education for six years at South Knoll Elementary.
Before teaching for College Station, Haggerty taught in Bryan for 15 years. She also spent eight years in the Peace Corps.
Haggerty had to submit a personal story about her teaching experience for the contest.
