The Texas Department of Transportation has performed a speed study on FM 1940 and submitted the results to The Texas Transportation Commission for approval.

At the December meeting, the Transportation Commission approved the lowering of the speed limit to 55 mph for the entire length of FM 1940.

Crews have been scheduled to change the speed limit signs along the road today, January 7.

yeah we Austinites love to express our comments whether they be smart or dumb, by the way, truckers can not go more than 60 on FM roads as prescribed by state law. Yet cars may go 60 or 65 day and night.

Posted by: Ryan Ennis on Apr 28, 2009 at 10:55 PM
at night, trucks would be limited to 55 mph anyway which is statute law on Texas (FM) Farm Roads

well fm 2154 is in wellborn and 1940 is just off of osr when your going to new baden

Rp, why is it when someone from Austin posts in these stories, their comment always sounds DUMB?, just like yours did.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 10, 2009 at 07:13 AM
To RP in Austin....you must be a longhorn, your comment was spoken like a true tsipper!

Posted by: g Location: franklin on Jan 9, 2009 at 08:17 AM
this is to rp in Austin........I'm sure you are not aware of how dangerous most rural or FM roads are....if it was you or your family traveling these roads on a daily basis you might have a different perspective...

When the 70 mph speed limit was first introduced, they said it was only suppossed to be for interstate highways. I think it's ridiculous that a road that has people's driveways coming off of it can have a 70 mph speed limit. It's very unsafe.

Posted by: Randy Location: College Station on Jan 8, 2009 at 08:55 PM
TxDot is clueless in determining safe speed limits on our roadways. They are more concerning with "moving traffic" than safety. There is not much "moving traffic" when DPS has to shut down a roadway in both directions to work another fatality accident. There are too many roads with 70 MPH limits in our state. No governmental entity is more incompetent than TxDot.

to heck with you whiners, i want to spend billion, billions i say, on super highways from mexico to africa.

I would like to see them do something about Highway 30 (Bryan/College Station area) also. There is a part of Hwg 30 just outside of College Station headed to Huntsville where the highway narrows to a narrow 2 lane road, there is no middle turning lane, and there have been many accidents & deaths on this road. A lot of the accidents are people trying to turn into drvieways and they get rear ended by traffic going more than 55, its a very dangerous situation. I wish they would widen that stretch of the highway and add in a turning lane.

i think OSR needs to be doing 55 allso way to many people drive crazy on that road to many hills for that road to go 70 i dont why they made it where you can 70 in first place 55 be better

we've asked for a speed reduction of fm 46 on serveral different occasions & have been told there's nothing that can be done. Apparently multiple accidents, speeding semis, and homes near the road aren't reason enough.

We live at Camp Creek Lake and this road is extremely narrow. They did repairs about a year ago, but all they did was build the road up and create a steep dropoff at the edge of the road with no shoulder. And there are ALOT of 18 wheelers traveling this road now due to the oil and gas production. Someone died a few months ago after being forced off the road and having their vehicle roll down the steep dropoff. Just the other night, an 18 wheeler sped past (as in went around) me on a hill! This road really needs to be widened and have a real shoulder added. And unless the cops are out actively patrolling this road, not many people are going to be going 55, I guarantee.

it's about time. while the lower speed limit will help, the road still needs to be fixed-made wider and with some sort of a shoulder. it's to narrow.

Posted by: Vick Location: New Baden on Jan 7, 2009 at 01:22 PM
Sounds good but WHY did they make the road so narrow without a shoulder? I hear if you have a flat that there is no where to pull over.

1940 is an FM road in Robertson County. It stretches from Hwy 79 in New Baden to OSR before the Navasota River. It is a very dangerous road and the speed deduction is very much needed as far as I'm concerned. However, if people were to use common sense more often it wouldn't be as dangerous as it is. Even though there may be a posted speed limit, that does not always mean that is is safe to drive that posted limit. Once again, common sense while driving is very important! If 55 doesn't feel safe, don't drive 55!

this change is way past due. seems like all of the accidents on this road would have warranted this change long ago. this has been a treacherous road to travel since the TxDot "repairs".

Posted by: bryan on Jan 7, 2009 at 11:47 AM
This road is in Robertson County. If anyone knows where Camp Creek it, it's that road.

About time! FM 1940 is off OSR, east of Hwy 46 and runs north-ish up to New Baden & Hwy 79. Too many accidents and fast driving big rigs. Hope this area gets a lot more visits from the Highway Patrol & local law enforcement to really 'drive' this change home to those folks.

Posted by: NoNo Location: FM 60 on Jan 7, 2009 at 11:19 AM
No, hwy 60 is actually FM 60, University Drive & Raymond Stotzer Parkway.....go figure. Three names for the same road

there are many 1940 FM roads in Texas. What street is this??? Hwy 60???

Posted by: steve Location: new baden on Jan 7, 2009 at 10:48 AM
Finally! I live on FM1940 and can attest that reducing the speed limit is in the interest of safety. It was a pretty bad road before TxDot "repaired" it by creating a steep drop off at the edge without a shoulder. Now it is extremely unsafe. The traffic has increased ten-fold or more over the past five or six years due in large part to the oil and gas development. I have been run off the road numerous times, had my windshield broken by rocks, seen people passing unsafely and had an 18 wheeler tipped over in front of my house. Most trucks drive over 70 mph in the middle of the road to negotiate the numerous curves and avoid the drop off at the edge. Hopefully, DPS will enforce the lower speed limit and make the road safer for all of us who travel on it.

Where is FM 1940?

Posted by: citizen on Jan 7, 2009 at 10:15 AM
how about fm 2154

Posted by: Mae Location: Franklin on Jan 7, 2009 at 10:15 AM
Hip Hip Hooray!

Posted by: DW Location: Bryan on Jan 7, 2009 at 09:23 AM
They need to do this on a lot more roads that FM 1940. But, then there is enforcement of these speed reductions. We don't have enough Police to do this.
