A judge set an October 16th trial date for Tejano artist Joe Lopez.
The 56-year-old former lead singer of "Grupo Mazz" is accused of drugging and molesting a 13-year-old girl in 2004.
Lopez was released on bond after appearing in state district court in Brownsville with his new attorneys, The Brownsville Herald reports.
He had fired his previous attorney on Monday and rejected a plea bargain proposed by prosecutors.
Lopez is accused of statutory rape and molesting an underage girl with a date rape drug. Prosecutors say they have DNA evidence linking him to the crime, which allegedly occurred in April 2004 at his home in the Ranch Viejo resort community.
Defense attorney Michael Young says Lopez maintains his innocence and that the state will have a difficult time proving Lopez is guilty.
