Police say a Vietnam War veteran died in Houston after being beaten during a brutal robbery and thrown in a creek.
Authorities say 57-year-old Barney Goodman was beaten and left for dead by robbers who wanted his 18-hundred dollar monthly veteran's disability payment.
The Baytown resident died this weekend at a Houston hospital. A passing motorist had discovered him trying to claw his way out of a
creek in Liberty County, northeast of Houston.
Liberty County Sheriff Greg Arthur called the crime "unusually cruel."
Goodman had lost both of his legs to diabetes. His brother, Richard Ford, says Goodman was badly beaten and not wearing his prosthetic legs when he was found.
Ford said Monday that family members were unsure of the cause of death. An autopsy was pending.
Before he died, Goodman told police he was attacked by two men in a pickup and then thrown in the creek.
