A reserve officer with the Kilgore Police Department told authorities a story of kidnapping and assault that stretched from East Texas to Oklahoma City.

But investigators say it isn't true.

John Michael Cannon Junior, also a former member of the Gladewater school board, was arrested Wednesday and charged with filing a false report to a peace officer during the course of an investigation, a class B misdemeanor. That's according to Lieutenant Larry Wiginton of the Smith County Sheriff's Office.

He was released on $500 bond. He did not immediately return a phone message left by The Associated Press.

The arrest stemmed from Cannon telling Smith County investigators, Oklahoma City police and the FBI in July that he was carjacked and kidnapped as he traveled to work in Tyler.

The FBI said it is continuing to investigate the case.
