The agriculture industry has been hit hard by the recent drought. But relief is on the way.

The U-S Department of Agriculture has designated six counties in Brazos Valley as natural disaster areas thanks to the lack of rain.

Farmers and ranchers in Burleson, Brazos, Grimes, Leon, Madison and Robertson counties can now apply for emergency loan applications through the Farm Service Agency.

According to the agency, other than 2007, Texas has been in a drought for 5 to 7 years.

To get more information on the loans, you can contact the F-S-A Office in Franklin at 979-828-3338.

The low interest loans are averaging $150 thousand dollars each.

Being a fifth generation Grimes Countiean, and having been involved in livestock for 70 years I've never got in line for government hand outs. Something about lining up at the trough like a hog, that turns my stomach. Also history tells us that the government is not likely to give you a check with no strings attached. A neighbor of mine signed up for the bird manure program, I tried to talk him out of it, the state came and inspected his property and it cost him more to clean his creeks than what they paid him. Made a believer out of him. The best thing to do is not owe money on you're livestock and when conditions get bad and you're weekly cost gets more than you're herd will support sell.

Whatcha wanna bet Randy will be the first one to complain when he can't get (or afford) a steak, cause all the ranchers had to sell out! We are getting close to having to sell every cow we have because it is too costly to feed them. No rain, no grass, rising feed costs....get a clue, Man!
