A memorial service will be held Monday afternoon at the University of Texas for former Texas Governor Ann Richards.
Among the scheduled speakers are Democratic Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk, former San Antonio Mayor Henry Cisneros and syndicated columnist Liz Smith. A private burial is planned at the Texas State Cemetery.
Richards died Wednesday at the age of 73 from cancer of the esophagus. She was governor from 1991 to 1995.
Ordinary people bid farewell over the weekend. Hundreds of people stood in line in the rain yesterday outside the Capitol, where Richards spent two days lying in state.
Austin attorney Carlos Garcia was among them. He says Richards opened the doors of government to minorities and women more than anyone else in Texas.
