New insight into a bizarre crash that claimed the life of one and severely injured several others.
On Wednesday, the Madison County Sheriff's Office released the 911 calls, detailing the frightening moments before and after Sunday's fatal wreck on I-45.
Troopers say it happened about three miles north of Madisonville after a pick-up truck began driving the wrong way down the Northbound stretch of highway and struck another truck head on.
"An old man just made a U-turn in the middle of the highway," one 911 caller reported. "He made a U-turn in the road," the operator asked. "He almost caused a huge wreck."
It's a last minute plea for help from a motorist who just had a near miss with a truck going the wrong direction down this one-way stretch of I-45.
"He's driving Southbound on the North side," the caller said. "He obviously has no idea of what he's doing, he almost hit the car dead in front of me. He drove at me and another car in front of us and at the very last second turned off."
Seconds later, several other cars aren't as fortunate. 911 recordings depict the moments immediately following the accident.
"Madison County 911 what's you emergency," the operator said. "I'm here on Highway 45 and there's a head-on collision," the caller said.
"There's been... my vehicle and quite a few vehicles involved in it," a caller said. "But there's two that are really bad."
"Whenever I got there, I noticed the two vehicles were pretty damaged on the front two ends both on the passenger sides," DPS Trooper Kurt Kelm said.
Trooper Kelm says it was the driver of the Ford pick-up, Joe Ed Young, 74, of Madisonville that was headed in the wrong direction when he struck two sisters from Sherman, Crystal and Amber Pointer, in their Dodge pick-up.
Young died on the scene, the two siblings were rushed to St. Joseph in Bryan.
"We haven't missed a visiting hour, we've been up here the whole time," Jackie Pointer said.
The women's brother, Jackie Pointer, has been pacing the hospital floors since the accident happened.
His 23 year-old sister, Amber sustained some big bumps and bruises, while his other sister 22-year-old Crystal has been fighting for survival in the ICU.
"She's got a lot of broken bones, her eye socket and her nose were shattered, broken jaw in two places, her shoulder blade, ribs, and lungs are bruised. Her liver's cut, both her hips are broken," Jackie said.
Jackie says seeing his two younger sisters in pain is the hardest part. But after seeing the wreckage and hearing accounts of the accident, Jackie thinks it's a miracle his sisters are still here.
"My little sister, Crystal, who is in ICU is really lucky. There was only inches on her side of the truck, just inches," Pointer said.
The two sisters injured in the wreck are said to be improving. Amber was released from the hospital earlier this week, but family members say Crystal still has a long road ahead.
Only one of the two sisters was insured. Family members say they're getting some help from their church family but are concerned about the growing costs. They say to airlift the women to the hospital cost them about $17,000 a person.
A number of people witnessed the crash and stopped to help.
When good samaritan Eddie Hamilton of Reagan arrived on the scene, a Madisonville firefighter was already hard at work.
"I went through the window and started taking care of Crystal and he could do more with Amber. Then we had to basically wait until the fire trucks and everyone got there with the jaws (of life) to try and get them out of the truck," Hamilton said.
Hamilton said he didn't think Crystal would survive the trip to the hospital, but he was happy to visit her at St. Joseph Regional Health Center on Tuesday and see the progress she is making.
The autopsy results for Young could take another one to two weeks, officials said.

Amber, Jackie, and Irene, please call me I will help in any way that I can. Tell Crystal to hang in there and be strong. She has a lot of friends here pulling for her and are willing to do whatever we can to help you guys. I love all of you.
What a bad situation for both families. They are in our thoughts and prayers. Life is precious at any age.
Alpha Dog - if the Young family knew their relative had medical problems and shouldn't be driving then that is something we should know. Maybe another family debating on their relatives ability to drive will see this and take that person's keys away before another senseless tragedy occurs.
