A 21-year veteran of the Border Patrol has been arrested on charges that he accepted bribes to allow drugs through a border checkpoint.
An FBI spokeswoman says Arturo Arzate Junior was arrested Friday on charges of bribery, conspiracy and knowingly distributing a controlled substance.
Federal investigators accuse the 47-year-old of accepting payments to allow cocaine and marijuana through a checkpoint where he was stationed in El Paso County, according to a criminal complaint.
He allegedly accepted 16-thousand dollars in bribery payments during an investigation that began last fall.
A Border Patrol spokesman says Arzate has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
