Lighting is one of nature's most deadly acts and each year, lightning strikes about one thousand people, killing about 100. After being struck last year, a Bryan teen is finally able to talk about the day that changed his life.
It was July 8th, 2008, and it started out like any other hot summer day, the skies were clear and blue and the sun was shining brightly. That could only mean one thing, it was a great day to be on the golf course.
And that's exactly where Lane and Clayton Hudson were when their dream day of golf turned into one terrifying nightmare.
"15-minutes into my warm-up I got struck by lightning," says Lane Hudson.
Even though he can't remember the minutes that followed the initial hit, what happened to Lane next was even more frightening.
Hudson says, "for about 15-minutes, I was knocked out completely. I didn't have a pulse or anything...I'm pretty lucky to be alive."
During that time his coach performed CPR on Lane until help arrived. In the days that followed, he was in a coma and doctors prepared his family for the worst.
Lane's mother, Necie Hudson says, "One of the trauma doctors told us that they rate their patients from three to 15, with three being severe and 15 being normal. Lane rated a four. Fours typically don't make it and if they do, they're in a vegetative state."
Eight months after his life altering experince, Lane's fully recovered and able to talk about what happened and even has some mementos from that day.
The golf club he was using is bent and partially melted. Lane says, "it's a graphite shaft and it snapped it right in half."
Lane also kept the ball cap he was wearing and says, "it's got a hole in it. It's about the size of a softball."
The shorts he had on even have a hole where the lightning bolt exited then his body, striking his brother. Lane even has most of the shirt he was wearing...he doesn't have all of it because some of it melted to his body and says, "they tore it off of me."
But the most visible evidence from that day is his necklace that's because part of will forever be burned on to his neck. It's that mark that reminds Lane's family just how powerful the forces of Nature are and how quickly they can alter one's future.
"We realized how precious life is and never take life for granted. Children are our most important things in our life and through the power of prayer and God above, we're thankful to have both of our boys here today," says Necie Hudson.
These days, Lane's golf game is better than ever, and one day he hopes to play in college.
