DWI Task Force Arrests Four; Two Forced to Give Blood
Seven additional officers are patrolling College Station's streets this week, looking for drunk drivers. Those arrested will not have the option of losing their driver's license and declining a breath or blood test.

Every year, the promise of good music and good times draws thousands to Chilifest and the tiny town Snook. 15 miles away in College Station, police are getting ready.

"There's gonna be 30-40 thousand people attending on Saturday probably," said Sgt. Billy Couch.

The department has assigned a seven member "DWI No Refusal" task force. The task force will be in addition to the seven officers normally patrolling the city's streets in the evening.

"We have have two judges on Standby," said Sgt. Couch.

The judges will ready to sign search warrants for DWI suspects who won't voluntarily give a breath or blood sample.

"If you read the fine print, signing for your driver's license means you agree to provide us- in a DWI instance- with a sample of your breath or blood. If you decline, that's why your drivers license is confiscated and suspended automatically," said Officer Clayton Brown.

However, giving up a license in lieu of a sample, isn't an option in College Station this weekend. A search warrant means police will get a blood sample with or without a suspect's cooperation.

"Hopefully we can serve as more of a deterrent," said Brown.

On the first night of the task force, three people were arrested for driving drunk, and one for underage drinking and driving.

"You're how old?," asked Brown.

"19" replied Steven Currie.

Although police said Currie later agreed to a breath test, two others didn't. Their blood was drawn by order of a search warrant. An idea some people may not like- but don't necessarily have to worry about.

"If you don't drive impaired, you wont be contacted by us, you won't go to jail, its that simple," said Brown.

The Texas Department of Public Safetly will have around 30 officers in various shifts patrolling Highway 60 between Snook and College Station, during Chilifest.
