Galena Park school officials say a 12-year-old football player collapsed and died after a light training session with his school team.
The seventh grader died at a Houston hospital Wednesday after his coaches efforts' to revive him with CPR were unsuccessful. The student has not been publicly identified.
Craig Eichhorn, a spokesman for the Galena Park school district, says the boy had participated in what he called "light football practice and conditioning drills" shortly before his collapse.
The conditioning consisted of several 100-yard sprints.
Eichhorn says the team had gathered around their coach for a talk about the importance of academics when the boy collapsed.
A hospital official says an autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.
The seventh grader was the third football player in the Houston area to die in ten days.
