Oakwood Police Chief Oly Ivey was arrested Monday for allegedly using a taser on his live-in girlfriend.
Ivy is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond is set at $100,000.
His attorney says that's five times the amount normally set for this offense, and Thursday morning he'll ask a judge to lower Ivy's bond to $20,000.
Ivy's attorney says his client isn't a flight a risk; Ivy's background may prove otherwise.
30-year-old Oly Ivy was sworn in as the Oakwood Police Chief in January. Oakwood city council members say it was the officer's knowledge, experience and sincerity that won them over.
Ivy's law enforcement experience totaled just over 7 years, and took him to Ohio and six other departments in Texas.
However, not all were jobs Ivy stayed at very long. He worked just four months in Lott, eight months in Marlin, 10 at McGregor, nine in Valley Mills, and eleven months with Hearne Police.
Ivy was out of law enforcement around a year-and-a-half between most of those jobs.
The city of Oakwood was aware of Ivy's short-term stints, but city council member David Neel said the city never did a background check.
Neel said the city left the background check up to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education, or TECLOSE.
A spokesperson for TECLOSE said the agency doesn't run background checks, and simply provides law enforcement work history.
TECLOSE records show no disciplinary actions or suspensions were taken against Ivy's license.
Court records show in December of 2003, while Ivy was not employed by a police department, he was charged with domestic violence. The allegation was made against Ivy in Portsmouth Ohio.
The case went on for nearly two months before it was dismissed because alleged victim failed to appear in court.
In Oakwood, Ivy was on the job just two months in Oakwood before he was arrested on allegations of tasering his wife. Monday evening the Oakwood City Council voted to terminate his employment, making Oakwood the latest police department Ivy only stayed at a few months.
Both Bryan and College Station Police Departments perform background checks. Before an officer can be hired at either place, the applicant must also pass a credit check, psychological exam, and polygraph test.

Your mother not only help you but she help the people of Oakwood. Tell her THANKS from across the tracks.
Well have you heard Oly Ivy made bond and was released yesterday. And another young victim goes in to hiding in fear for her life and the lives of her children.Watch out women of Hillsborough and Hill County an abuser is loose. He doesn't have his tazer, but he still has his fist, guns and suposed charm.Thats okay though this brave young victim will have her day in court and hopefully get justice for herself and the past victims.Closure will come in time and hopefully he will not be able to abuse anyone else.
