Gov. Rick Perry Friday reiterated his request to FEMA Friday for an emergency declaration for dozens of counties in Central Texas and around the state based on wildfire threat and authorized additional state resources to battle the fires burning now.
The list of counties at risk from fires includes Bell, Bosque, Coryell, falls, Freestone, Hamilton, Hill, Lampasas, Limestone, McLennan, Milam, Mills, Navarro, Robertson and San Saba in Central Texas.
Fires in northwest Texas are responsible for at least three deaths.
Over the last two days, wildfires in Central and North Texas have charred 100,000 acres.
“The rapidly spreading wildfire threat across North Texas demonstrates how quickly conditions can change and the importance of heeding warnings from local officials,” Perry said.
“I urge Texans, particularly in the northern part of our state, to exercise extreme caution and monitor the situation closely.”
Perry originally requested the FEMA declaration on Feb. 24, but it was denied on March 17.
He appealed the denial on March 20.
Since the first of the year, fires have burned about 240,000 acres in the state, Perry said, destroying 161 homes and damaging 20 others.
