Former first lady Barbara Bush teamed up with the Bryan school district on Monday to promote literacy.
Barbara Bush was the featured guest at the Bryan ISD Education luncheon at Briarcrest Country Club in Bryan.
Since 1999, the BISD Education Foundation has distributed over $195,000 in teacher grants.
Mrs. Bush has been long been a supporter of literacy programs with the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy awarding nearly $16 million to projects nationwide.
On Monday, the former first lady talked about school safety prompted by the recent school shootings.
"More than ever, the education of our children is a task too large for any one group of people, the entire community must get involved," said Bush.
The BISD Education Foundation presented Mrs. Bush with a children's book and a literacy grant in her honor.
