Enrollment at Texas colleges and universities has grown by more than 27-thousand students this fall.

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board reports most of the increases came at two-year schools.

More than 586-thousand students are enrolled at community, junior and technical colleges across the state -- an increase of about 20-thousand from last year.

About one-point-two (M) million students were enrolled in some type of higher education this fall.

This year's increase is twice as high as the growth reported last year, but it trails the amount seen each year between 2001 and 2004.

Higher Education commissioner Raymund Paredes says there needs to be even greater increases to achieve state participation goals -- and his staff will review the situation.

The board wants to increase enrollment to one-point-six (M) million by 2015.
