HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Death row inmate Donell Jackson was executed Wednesday night over a 1993 slaying in Houston.
Jackson was convicted of killing a teenager to keep him from testifying about a drive-by shooting in Houston. Jackson's victim was 17-year-old Mario Stubblefield.
David Smith was fingered as the gunman in the earlier drive-by shooting. Smith later was convicted of paying Jackson $200 to shoot Stubblefield -- to prevent the victim from testifying. Smith was sentenced to life in prison.
Jackson was the 23rd death row inmate in Texas to have his punishment carried out this year.
