Two Waco-area high school football players have been charged with assault for allegedly hitting a junior varsity player in the back with cleats.
McLennan County prosecutors filed misdemeanor charges against
Lane Francis Caruthers and Jonathan Lee Duran. Both are 17-year-old
senior linemen on the Midway team.
The maximum penalty for a Class A misdemeanor conviction is a
year in the county jail and a four-thousand-dollar fine.
They were arrested in September after they allegedly hit the
17-year-old J.V. player with cleats after practice for drinking from
a water cooler reserved for the varsity team.
Prosecutor Jason Darling says he filed formal charges after
interviewing the victim and several witnesses and seeing photos of
the victim's scratched back.
Defense attorneys say both players have taken responsibility for
the incident, but that prosecution them is taking matters too far.
But Waco police spokesman Steve Anderson says the incident went
beyond hazing or locker room antics.
