CAPITOL HILL (AP) - President Bush's pick for defense secretary says Iraq goes to the top of the to-do list once he gets the job.

Robert Gates made the rounds on Capitol Hill, meeting various senators. After a chat with Armed Services Committee Chairman John Warner, Gates said "one of the highest priorities, if not the highest priority" will be looking at the Iraq situation.

Warner says his panel will hold a hearing on Gates' nomination December 5. Several lawmakers hope to have a vote by year's
end.

Next week Gates meets with Senator Carl Levin, who'll head the Senate Armed Services Committee when the Democrats take power in January.
