A plan in the works by area school boards could bring a new wireless internet service to the area. Bryan, College Station and Hearne districts have agreed to team up to either rent or sell low powered channels that each of the districts own.
For more than a decade Bryan ISD has rented the low power TV channels to independent cable companies to provide channel options to people in the rural areas of Brazos County. The district made a small profit off the plan.
But recently, the FCC changed the regulations on these channels so that after 2006 they will no longer carry low powered tv signals. They will instead be used to provide wireless internet service.
The districts will now begin to discuss the type of bundle plan they will present to wireless companies.
