Sam Houston students will remember one of their own Wednesday evening, during a vigil held on the university campus.
The service is in memory of 20-year-old Rachel Pendray, who was killed in an apparent murder-suicide Sunday night.
It will take place in the Student Center Ballroom at 6 p.m.
Pendray, a pre-nursing major and Sam Houston cheerleader, was shot multiple times by her former high school classmate 24-year-old Jake Taylor, who then fatally shot himself.
Initial reports had indicated Pendray was trying to break off a relationship with the Houston resident, who was allegedly obsessed with her, but Huntsville police say they believe the two were just friends.
Taylor's mom, Linda Gonzales, said her son was suffering from depression.
Gonzales told the news media that Taylor had overdosed on sleeping pills in November and it was Pendray who had called police.
Funeral services for Rachel Pendray will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fair Haven United Methodist Church.
Fair Haven is located at 1330 North Gessner Dr. in Houston.
