Bryan's city leaders will be in session and busy Tuesday, including with a critical piece of their Downtown puzzle.
The commerce and development board will vote on transferring management of the La Salle Hotel to Denver-based Magnolia Hotels. City staff recommended the company because they said Magnolia could immediately take over management once a contract was finalized, along with the companies history with historic hotels.
The city has often referred to La Salle as a centerpiece of the revitalization of downtown, but the hotel has often been in the red when the financial totals have been tallied.
We've told you about the six surveillance cameras being used by Bryan PD in the Downtown area. Now, the city council has the chance to sign off on four new cameras as part of Phase 2 of the police network.
The price tag is a little less than $80,000, and the locations for the new cameras, if approved, are not being disclosed.
BPD officials say Downtown was chosen for Phase 1, in part, because of existing technology to hook up the cameras.
Over at Bryan PD's new stomping grounds, formal approval from the council is expected for Assistant Chief Peter Scheets to take over as the acting chief. Scheets was given the reigns just days ago after Bobby Whitmire's interim tenure expired.
It was last week that Ty Morrow resigned his post as chief after more than half a year on leave for a domestic incident. City Manager David Watkins says his search for a replacement will be limited to those with ties to Bryan and those who interviewed for the post before.

Retired Lt. Ben Smith would be an excellent replacement for Morrow AND Joey Dunn would be a great replacement for Watkins. Both care about our community, are hard working, honest AND do not beat their wives. Good-bye Watkins.
The City has invested in the LaSalle Hotel, but not enough to charge the kind of rates that would allow it to profit. Over the past ten years I have seen that hotel blossom under very adequate marketing strategies, but it definitely needs to be marketed to former students as does the downtown area. Bridal business is also big in this area because of how trendy and photogenic it now is. They may want to add a ballroom or partner with the Brazos Cotton Exchange for wedding packages. I think having Texas Reds each year brings more and more positive local business and travelers to the area. The area has changed so much in the past ten years, but the LaSalle does need something extra to keep its place as the 'centerpiece'.
