A Texas A&M student who left the university as a freshman to join the Marine Corps has been killed in Iraq.
Lance Corporal Luke Yepsen of Kingwood was killed Thursday. The infantryman was conducting combat operations in Al-Anbar province when he died.
Family members are remembering Yepsen as a Marine who knew the risks, but felt he had a calling.
"When we went to see him graduate boot camp, that's when all of us really understood," Yepsen's brother, Kyle, said. "He's part of something most of America will never understand, you know?"
Yepsen, 20, had been in Iraq fewer than three months when he was killed.
He leaves behind an extended family and a fiance to whom he had recently proposed.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
