Five days before the 4th of July and fire officials are reminding citizens it's illegal to shoot fireworks within the city limits. Those who decide to break that law and are caught, expect to pay a hefty price.

With Brazos County experiencing drought conditions and a burn ban being enforced, violators who ignore fireworks restrictions could shell-out up to $2,000 in fines.

And just to show you how serious the fire marshal is, you don't even have to light your fireworks to get fined because anyone possessing or simply storing fireworks within the city limits is in violation.

It's also important to know that while the purchase of some fireworks is legal, aerial skyrockets with sticks or any missiles that have fins are temporarily illegal.

But if you want to shoot off your own fireworks, there are plenty of sellers eager to accommodate you, but just because some vendors doing explosive business right not, doesn't mean operators don't have a booming stand.

Candice Hawkes who operates a fireworks stand west of College Station says, "85% of the sales at a fireworks stand is on the 3rd and 4th, so that's going to be when you have your long lines and you're going to be standing out here sweating."

As the 4th of July approaches, Candice is counting on those long lines because she and her fiancee, Mike Bellis plan on using the money they make to help pay for their October wedding. For now, the couple's encouraged because they say their sells are just where they need to be for this time of year.

"It's been a little slow, the dry weather...a lot of people are asking whether or not it's legal to actually pop the fireworks and we have explained to them the fireworks are legal...just to use safety precautions," says Hawkes.

To the south of College Station, customers at another fireworks stand have some of the same concerns.

Belinda Luna says, "the concerns right now is of course the condition of the weather, the drought, no rain...so that's a concern for me and we're trying to have a safe fourth, so we're being limited and are limiting ourselves, as to what we would buy."

Like all operators, Martin England tries to ease his customers concerns and have an answer to their questions.

Martin England says his customer are asking, "what can we buy? What's legal?" England's answer is simple, "everything in the store, everything that's on the shelf is legal for you to buy and legal for you to shoot in the county, not in the city limits."

And like Hawkes and her finance, England's fireworks venture is also a fundraiser. Martin is the band director at Navasota High School and for over the past two year's, he, along with his students and band parents have been supplementing the band's budget with the funds raised from fireworks sells.

"We help the kids that are in the band program in Navasota. We feed them for football games, it helps with travel, equipment needs and supplement the things the school already provides us," says England.

For individuals buying fireworks, it's wise to use extreme caution and common sense when handling them. For example, .make sure you always read and follow the directors on the label. When igniting fireworks, fire them only outdoors...never inside. Also, be sure you have water on hand, just in case you need it and never experiment or attempt to make your own firework. Finally, make sure you store fireworks in a cool and dry place.

Due to the high temperatures, the wind, and little rain, all fireworks should be strictly controlled. I finshed up with a woodland fire yesterday, because of the possibilaty of fireworks. I'm a volunteer fire fighter.

"Instead of calling the cops, how about offering to take your neighbor to lunch to discuss fireworks safety issues? " Maybe because when I tried that, they called ME a Nazi and told me to FO? They don't give a rodent's rump about the possibility of their bottle rockets (which they purchased before the ban and BY GOD are GOING to USE no matter what I say) starting any fires because as long as the wind stays from the south, the bloody things will land on MY haypatch and any fire they start will burn AWAY from theirs.
