A new Bryan bakery is serving up a huge helping of "green." The Greenhouse Bakery is the Brazos Valley's first business that's environmentally friendly inside and out. The bakery has only been open for four weeks, but it's already attracting the environmentally conscious and the curious.
Bebe Hancock has been baking professionally for years, but this is the first time she can call the kitchen her own.
"It's been a lot of fun," Hancock said. "I have some of my family working here too and it's fun to work with the young people, it makes me feel young."
Bebe came up with the idea for the Greenhouse Bakery about a year ago as a way to give back while doing something she loves.
"It's a green business," Hancock said. "That's how we came up with the Greenhouse Bakery."
Everything about the bakery is environmentally friendly. There are solar panels on the roof, the water heater is generated by the sun, the appliances are refurnished, the lighting is energy efficient, the floor a natural product, the green paint is non-toxic, and the take out containers are all biodegradable.
The concept is new to the area, but it's already catching on
"It's all age groups too," Hancock said. "It's not just the young people who think it's cool to be green."
However, you will pay a little more to protect nature, the price of everything on the bakery's menu reflects the cost of being green. That's because environmentally friendly products are more expensive.
To Bebe it's just a way of life
"I'm enjoying it, it's a lot of fun," Hancock said.
The Greenhouse Bakery is open for breakfast and lunch. You'll find homemade items, including the owner's specialty desserts.
The bakery is located at 6224 FM 1179 in Bryan. It is open Tuesday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bakery is closed on Mondays.
