A couple from Riverside have pleaded not guilty in North Carolina in the death of a four-year-old boy police say was severely malnourished.

Richard and Amber Dowen are charged with first-degree murder in the death of her son in September 2005.

They entered their pleas Thursday and remain in custody.

Summer trial dates have been set.

Investigators said the child weighed less than 20 pounds when he was found unresponsive in the man's tractor-trailer rig. The average weight of a four-year-old is 35 to 40 pounds.
