A local businessman who bribed a College Station city supervisor is headed to jail.

Former Texcon president Carey Smith pleaded guilty Thursday to engaging in organized criminal activity. He was sentenced to 10 years deferred adjudication and ordered to pay a $150,000 fine up front. He must also serve 180 days in jail which began immediately.

As a term of Smith's guilty plea, the State will not prosecute the Texcon company.

Smith fraudulently billed the city of College Station for materials and labor from 2000-2002. He then bribed former public works supervisor Paul Urso to sign off on the bogus invoices. Urso was sentenced in October after pleading guilty.

Ok, people before all the bashing between the two start...The only differences in crime between Bryan and College Station really have to do with who is committing the crime. In a city that is larger and arguably more affluent the main difference is blue colar or white colar. People who are more educated tend to think that they are smarter than others and think that they can get away with more. Unfortunately, the law sometimes allows that. This guy is a thief. He took a lot of money and should be punished with a harsher sentence. No, he did not murder someone but he still is a criminal. Until the judge or the courts start handing down stricter sentencing, it will continue. This time he took the money from the city but next time, it could be you. It doesn't matter where you live or how much money certain people have, criminals live everywhere. Yes, I would prefer to live next door to a thief than a murderer but all in all, you can't escape any of it unless you live on the moon.
