Some Brazos Valley home owners are steamed because they paid thousands for a swimming pool, and all they got were broken promises.
Jason Herring started Wave Tec Pools in Bryan, in 1998. The company later relocated to Georgetown and expanded it's business. Now, quite a few pool owners would like to talk with Herring, but he's not making that very easy.
"They make it look easy, that was their thing, they make it look so easy," said Michelle Williams. Williams purchased a pool from Wave Tec in 2004, after she saw Wave Tec commericals advertising customers the pool of their dreams.
"Well you're not gonna get the pool of your dreams. That's for sure. You're gonna get the nightmare. You're gonna get a true nightmare and you're gonna be out a lot of money," said Williams.
Michelle Williams sees an eyesore every time she looks at her backyard. She said the problems started when she signed a contract with Wave Tec Pools in August of 2004, and came home to find supplies thrown in her yard.
"They sat there from August til the first part of October, last part of September when they actually finally showed up to break ground," Williams.
Michelle said contractors assured her the equipment hadn't rusted, then dug a hole for the pool one day and on the next, put the dirt back in.
"He explained to me that they dug the wrong dimension. So they just backfilled it, and then dug out again," said Williams. "I asked at that point, is this structure, are the walls compromised now?"
She said she was again told there wouldn't be problem. Three-and-a-half months later, in late January of 2005, contractors finished and filled her pool.
But the next day, "they drained the pool completely because there was some issue with the liner," said Williams.
According to Michelle, two months later the ground near her pump pad began caving in and Michelle was back on the phone with Wave Tec.
"I mean I'm talking weeks of calling multiple times, sending e-mails, leaving voicemails. They just don't respond," said Williams.
When the company did send a technician out, Michelle said she was told she didn't have a leak. It would take another round of calls for a second Wave Tec employee to find and fix a hole in her liner.
"And so I'm questioning hey this a brand new pool. We haven't even been in it, we haven't even swam in it and it's already patched," said Williams.
However, things were about to get worse. That summer, Michelle said there were more problems, but because the pool was holding water, an employee told her to call back in September.
'I called and called and called and called," said Williams.
Eight months later, when summer rolled around, the Williams got back in.
"The kids were swimming in the pool and that's when the side popped out and that's when water was back flowing," said Williams.
Michelle's boys, Drew and Preston, were five and seven at the time.
"Our dad was just scooping it and putting it back but it just kept flowing in," said Drew Pearson.
The boys weren't hurt, but haven't been allowed in, since then.
Across town, in Bryan, Linda Grimes was also trying to get a hold of Wave Tec. Two months after her pool was installed, she said the sidewalk cracks began.
"That's when I started getting on the phone to Wave Tec," said Grimes. "They kept saying they would come out and check it out. Never made it. All winter passed, they never made it," said Grimes.
The next spring, Linda's grandson was helping her get her pool ready.
"He was the first one to walk on the deck and he fell through it," said Grimes. "The plumber said it started leaking 2 or 3 months after my pool was put in. That's what rotted my deck, and we would have never found that if my grandson hadn't have fallen through."
While Linda continued to call and make thousands in repairs she claims Wave Tec promised to reimburse, back in College Station, the Williams hired an attorney.
In August of 2008, Wave Tec agreed to settle with the Williams for $75,000.
Michelle hasn't heard from Wave Tec since then.
Last August, when Grimes and Williams called Wave Tec Pools, in Georgetown, a recording said Wave Tec had closed for business. But had it? Tomorrow night we'll show you how we found Aggie Jason herring back in the pool business again.
To add insult to injury, when both Grimes and Williams signed contracts with Wave Tec, they agreed to put a second mortgage on their homes. To avoid foreclosure, they're both still making monthly payments, in Michelle's case, for a pool that hasn't been useable for three years.

RE: Barry Pool. They are owned by different folks now. I got my 28' round 4 years ago and have replaced liner and pump already. The warranties by the liner companies are really bogus. Best advice: look in thrifty nickel for someone selling or giving away an old one. Then shop online like ebay for a new liner at 1/4 the price of the new Barry pool company. I also got my motor online at half the cost they wanted. There is NO one to help you locally with an above ground pool, but there are several online companies I have found that are more than helpful and informative. I can't say anything about the new managment at Barry Pool but I was greatly dissatified at the old and I feel it led to the early demise of my pool liner and pump.
