One in four schools in the state of Texas scored an exemplary rating in the latest TEA Accountability scores, an increase of more than 100 percent over last year. On the flip side, there were the most unacceptably-rated school districts since 1994.

When it comes to the Brazos Valley, the numbers trend towards good news, especially in a few top counties.

Leon County has reason to celebrate. Of its 13 total schools, ten earned exemplary or recognized from the TEA. Two out of three Robertson County schools got those coveted ratings, with Washington County earning those ratings for seven of 11 schools.

When it comes to the having the highest rated districts, Robertson County takes the top spot. Four out of its five districts had exemplary or recognized ratings. Grimes County had three out of four with the top distinctions.

When it comes to the best districts, Franklin and Mumford are the cream of the crop. Each had all of its campuses as exemplary or recognized. Both had a pair of exemplaries. Normangee and Iola ISDs also had exemplary schools, along with some recognized. Head to the three schools each in Leon and Milano ISDs, and find all its schools with recognized status.Centerville's and Burton's districts each have two schools. All were recognized.

Only two districts were rated unacceptable by the TEA. Caldwell ISD had a recognized and two acceptable campuses, but its high school was unacceptable. Looking at Brenham ISD's four exemplary and one recognized campus and you wouldn't think it would earn an overall unacceptable, but it did. Both districts had low numbers on science test scores, and completion rates for economically disadvantaged students did not improve a required amount.

Congratulations Franklin ISD. This is not a surprise or an accident. The administration, faculty, staff and students work exceptionally hard and have the support of the entire community. Franklin is a great place to live and raise a family; and our schools are a big part of that. Well done, Franklin ISD.
