It appears the city of Bryan is ready to name an interim police chief.
Retired Waxahachie Chief Bobby Whitmire was in Bryan Monday for an interview. Afterwards, City Manager David Watkins said Whitmire was the panel's unanimous pick.
If hired, Whitmire would serve only until a fulltime replacement is selected.
Watkins says hiring a temporary chief became necessary when the timeline for the departure of current chief Mike Strope was moved up.
Strope announced his retirement in October 2005 in order to work with a consulting firm, but had agreed to stay on in a reduced role until the city could find a replacement. However, just days ago, Strope said he would be have to be out as chief as of February 25.
According to the Waxahachie Daily Light, Whitmire became the police chief of the Dallas suburb in January 2002, and retired in December 2005.
