Two months from now, College Station residents will decide whether or not the city keeps it's 9 red-light cameras. Now those who want the cameras to stay, are ratcheting up the fight.

This week, some CS residents received a survey call about the cameras. That survey was commissioned by a newly formed political action committee called Keep College Station Safe.

American Traffic Solutions is the red-light camera company behind the PAC. A consultant for the group, Jessica Colon, who is working on behalf of ATS, said Keep College Station Safe is in the process of putting together a website where other locals can join the pro red-light camera efforts.

Emily Reiter, a former Texas A&M PhD candidate, and current Weight Watchers employee, is the group's treasurer.

"I think that is one of the best measures that our city can employ to keep our streets safe. They reduce collisions, it slowed down some drives and its going to work to really keep our streets safer for the future," said Reiter.

A spokesperson for ATS said the company had not contributed money to the PAC, but plans to. Colon said the PAC had not yet been billed for the phone survey.

Josh Weiss, a spokesperson for ATS, said the company had success in a similar situation last year when Washington state's red-light cameras were on the ballot. It supported a political action committee there, and the measure that would have banned the state's cameras was defeated.

According to ATS there are four municipalities across the United States where red-light cameras are on the November ballot, but College Station is the only one of those cities that is an ATS client.

The PAC's website is: www.keepcollegestationsafe.com

Jim Ash, the man who put the red-light cameras on the ballot, also has a website: www.civilviolation.com

How is being fined for breaking a law "stealing money from us"? Really? Maybe people should follow the rules and not turn right without stopping. A Facebook user who wants to ban the cameras said .."I've had 5 tickets so far spent $425.00 yesterday for turnin right on red and not stopping.... you got my vote" People who break rules ought not whine about it.

Freedom of info request to CS revealed the following: 2006 - 87 accidents at red light s or stop signs. 2007 -72 accidents(year before red light cameras). 2008 - 72 accidents (year red light cameras installed). City records show the Red light Cameras have not made the city safer. They have generated $906,000 in fines. This is a tax not a safety issue. Big Brother is always finding ways to "watch over us" and steal more money from us.

Cities are shortening the yellow lights to draw people into the indecision zone where they must decide to slam on the brakes and possibly go an inch over the line for a ticket, or accelerate through and possibly cause a collision. There is a point where drivers would have a hard time stopping in 3 seconds from 45mph, and there is no way to know how long the light has been green. This dangerous condition lines the pockets of American Traffic Solutions and the city. Photo enforcement that is truly for safety would have features like countdown timers, or a green light that blinks a couple of times before turning red. This technology is not rocket science. Crosswalks have it. From what I have researched so far, this particular system is designed for revenue. Texans are smarter than ATS gives us credit for. Do we really believe that a company in Arizona spent THEIR money to form a PAC in OUR COMMUNITY because they were concerned for our SAFETY? I don't think we are that naive.
