Houston authorities have detained a 14-year-old boy accused in the fatal beating of a two-year-old cousin he was baby-sitting.
Paramedics found injured Daveon Adams at a home where he and four other young children were under the care of the 14-year-old on Wednesday. Daveon died yesterday at a hospital.
Police say the teenage baby sitter admitted to investigators that he struck Daveon. He currently faces injury to a child charges in the Harris County juvenile court system.
Texas Department of Children's Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin says Daveon and his 3-year-old brother were placed in the care of their aunt and uncle because of their mother's drug use.
The couple already had seven children, but CPS determined the family could handle the two cousins.
A case worker had checked on the children two weeks ago. Olguin says there hadn't been any signs of danger.
