Defense Secretary Robert Gates vows the U.S. will work with Pakistan to combat violence in neighboring Afghanistan.
Gates has met with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, telling reporters afterwards that the U.S. and Pakistan will work together in a spring offensive against the Taliban.
Gates also says he hopes to play a constructive role in improving relations between Musharraf and the Afghan government.
The defense secretary echoed earlier remarks by American officials that the U.S. allowed for the growth of terrorism in the region by neglecting Afghanistan. Gates says the U.S. "won't make that mistake again."
