Mumford ISD and Iola ISD elementary schools are being recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools.

Throughout the state, only 26 public schools are on the list of more than 200 nationwide that have been designated Blue Ribbon Schools.

Only schools that are academically superior are able to receive the prestigious honor and U.S. Secretary of State Arne Duncan made the announcements Tuesday in Austin.

Following Tuesday's announcement, Douglas Devine, Superintendent for the Iola Independent School District issued this statement, "I am extremely proud of the staff and students of Iola Elementary School. The staff is a dedicated group of individuals working together to ensure that our students receive the best education possible. Iola Elementary School has achieved Recognized status for ten years and this year was named an Exemplary Campus. Recognition as a 2009 Blue Ribbon School is a well deserved honor for both our staff and students."

Later on News 3 will have more on Mumford ISD's reaction to receiving the honor and how they achieved the award.
