After the death of a player, a Dallas-area school district is requiring anyone who steps into a batting cage to wear a helmet.
The Grapevine-Colleyville school district announced new safety regulations yesterday.
Seventeen-year-old Chris Gavora died Saturday from a head injury suffered when a baseball hit him in the back of the head last week.
The district says he was pitching in a batting cage when a teammate in a different cage hit a line drive that went through an opening in the net and struck Gavora.
The new rules also call for district employees to inspect the batting cages regularly for problems with the netting.
Officials with the University Interscholastic League are also expected to discuss the helmet issue at a future meeting.
