Condemned inmate Joseph Nichols admits being in a Houston convenience store in 1980 with a friend and attempting to hold up the place.
What baffles Nichols is why he's likely to die Wednesday night when his buddy pleaded guilty to fatally shooting the 70-year-old store clerk. The victim was Claude Shaffer.
Nichols says he was at the scene, but never told authorities that he killed the victim.
His partner, Willie Williams, was convicted of the same crime and was executed 12 years ago.
Nichols would be the eighth prisoner executed this year in Texas and the second in as many days.
Mexican Mafia prison gang officer Robert Perez was executed Tuesday night over a 1994 double killing in San Antonio.
