Open Letter From Bush 41 to Aggie Family
Howdy! As you have probably heard, I have invited the 44th President of the United States of America to come visit the Bush Library and Texas A&M, and President Obama has graciously accepted.

Let me remind you that all the policies you wish to protest began before the current President took the oath of office. I am proud that our President has chosen to accept President Bush's invitation and hope that we are not embarrassed by the actions of a few individuals. [ Report Abuse ]

While it is unfortunate Mr. Obama and his cohorts are doing all they can to undermine the Constitution and at least half the population is so ignorant they don't even realize it, there is no good that can come out of making a scene at this event. The media, particularly in Texas, understand A&M is generally conservative, and will be looking for anything to cast the University and its students in a negative light. Be respectful, even if in opposition. [ Report Abuse ]

I'm really curious to know exactly what Obama has done to earn such scorn from you people. Can you name something he's actually done? (And I love the fact that some of you are already blaming your disrespectful behavior on people who will be bussed in from Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. Brilliant.) [ Report Abuse ]

I am really disgusted with this. President Bush has asked us to be polite to his guest, This man is not an aggie but he should be respected for what he has done for this community and university. After the tragedy of the bonfire collapse he made the effort to come to the scene and do whatever he and his wife could do to help. Now he is asking us to be polite to his guest. If you really think you need to protest then but an airline ticket and do it in Washington. Don't disrepect this great man or this incredible college. [ Report Abuse ]

I think the world of our former President Bush and am proud that he chose Texas A&M for his library. I am an Aggie, class of 71', and also a Conservative who believes in our Republic and Constitutional law. I would not be able to attend any kind of meeting whether the topic is Community Service or anything else that is on Mr. Obama's agenda, but if I did attend I would treat him with dignity and respect and I know all good Aggies will do that. That definitely is not any show of support to him or his regime that is running rough shod over our great country. This behavior is in respect of our great Aggie Institution and out of respect for President Bush. Gig'em and thanks for listening. [ Report Abuse ]

This is a FREE country people. Peacefully express your distaste for the President's policies. I'm tired of hearing how great Obama is. He's already taxing my children and grandchildren and they aren't working citizens yet. We are at a $1.4Trillion debt; doubling Bush 43 deficit. We will all be hit in 2010 w/ the lapse in Bush tax cuts; child tax credits are gone. Middle class hold on to your wallets b/c it is just beginning.......remember, the government knows how to spend your money better than you do. Therefore, protest as you have a right to. I honestly believe in the First Amendment right to free speech and free assembly. I just think there is a time and place for such. Protesting outside a graduation (as what occurred here in December 2008 when President Bush was here) or during a presentation for honorees of community service organizations (as what will happen on Friday) is highly disrespectful of those being honored at these events - it distracts from the intent of these ceremonies. Have some courtesy for those individuals receiving the honor of listening to a sitting President address their group. Save the protesting for appropriate times, not any chance you can get at the current leader. [ Report Abuse ]

As an Aggie,I would appreciate Larry and others who "lump" us all into one category (conservative/Republicans) to please stop. The university is working hard to diversify its student population and we have a very diverse faculty and staff - that are still part of the Aggie family and not the stereotypical conservative Aggie. I hope we can begin to grow and be accepting of everyone. Aggies claim to be christian and conservative, but I have seen very unchristian statements... Welcome to Aggieland President Obama!! Believe it or not - there are many that are excited and honored that you are coming. I just wish those of us would have had an opportunity to see him and share in the monumental experience. I’m sick and tired of these “enlightened” fellows like George H. W. Bush telling us to “behave”. Every American who is affected by the disastrous policies of the current President has the right to oppose him and those policies. It’s not necessary to preemptively apologize for any embarrassing expressions of our 1st Amendment rights. This is America after all, isn’t it? I’m beginning to wonder. Keep in mind too, that the current President’s idea of volunteerism is appropriating 3 billion dollars for ACORN. The root word is VOLUNTEER. Volunteers are not paid and they don’t need a current or former President telling then when and what to do (and what not to do). [ Report Abuse ]

As a member of the Class of 1951, I hve voted in every presidential election sinc I became of age-some 15 in all. I have never voted for a presidential candidate of President Obama's party. It makes no difference. He is our President and the only one that we have at this time. The ofrfice of the President and Commander in Chief is entitled to a courteous and respectful student body. I remember how embarrassed I was for the State of Texas when LBJ was booed and harassed at tu when he appeared there during the difficult Vietnam years. But Aggies are not like teasips. I know that the President will receive a warm welcome even though most of us will vote for his spponent in the next election. [ Report Abuse ]

President George H. W. Bush is a wonderful ambassador for the school we love the best. He is a statesman and well deserved the standing ovation he received last weekend at Kyle Field. Larry, I hope your child at A&M does not follow your bad advice. Whether you agree or disagree with the Presisent, his message of volunteerism is important, and Texas A&M should be honored to host this forum. Robert, the Aggie Code of Honor: an Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerates those who do (I fight not to add, "Sir!" on the end of that) is not appropriately applied here. However, if you must use it in this context, I wonder if you would be so inclined to use against the previous occupant of the Whitehouse? I am guessing, given your comments, you would not. How broadminded of you. [ Report Abuse ]

It is within the spirit of Aggies to be leaders in the military and have a strong commitment to volunteerism wherever they see a need. Even if you don't agree with his views, he is currently our President and the media would love to show A&M looking disrespectful or childish. Dear Pres Bush, I love & respect you greatly. But people should know Pres Obama’s concept of “service" is different than yours. For you it means neighbors helping each other– for Obama it means ACORN and left-wing politics undercover. Forgetting this distinction makes us unintentional enablers of Alinskyists. We’ve seen that to Obama EVERYTHING is politics. His health care takeover is the only thing that matters to him now, up for a vote very soon. It’s a huge disaster about to happen to our medical care, economy, debt, & our personal rights. Real consequences are on the line, and he will use your graciousness for his purposes. Opposing this is the most important thing a citizen can do right now. It outweighs any false fig-leafs of bipartisanship & moderation he’s desperate to obtain for the debate. Ags don’t have a tradition of meekness- we stand up, speak our minds & guard what we hold dear. If peaceful opposition to Obama is our "global image" most Ags are just fine with that. Hey Mr. President! I'm so happy that you're welcoming Obama. You're right, service and volunteering is immensely important to our nation, and has been a staple of our great republic since the days of our founding fathers. I really hope that people come out in support of this idea -- even if they don't support the current president -- and show that even when things get tough, it's never too tough to improve your neighborhood, your city, your state and your country through positive and effective service. Apathy has long had a stranglehold on any sort of service/volunteering. People denigrate those that do, and it's terrible. What happened to the American spirit? What happened to helping your neighbor? What happened? People gave up, and now they would rather sit at home. I for one hope something good comes out of this meeting and talk, and hope to see our young people invigorated with a new sense of care for their community and the American dream. [ Report Abuse ]

The current administration is hell bent on "change" in every aspect of our lives. We are seeing socialistic change in our constitution, our economic system, our representation, our health care, our freedoms, our entire lives...leaving in the wake devastation like we have never seen. I, unlike Mr. Obama and his wife, am proud to be an American and am proud of our cause for freedom to people around the world. I wonder what it will take before the misled people wake up and smell the stench of this administration. The only service this president understands is service to himself. I am not going to be romanticized into bowing down to a man who is destroying every aspect of this great nation. As long as I still have my freedom of expression I will exercise it, calmly and respectfully(as an Aggie should), but my patriotism will not allow me to remain silent. All that needs to happen for evil to prevail, is for good men to do nothing.do the right thing and exercise your freedom of speech tmr.

How long will this event be? Will it be over before noon? Sure isn't much info on this site for such a big to do. Lot's of views in posts. Is there a replica of the Constitution at the library that maybe potus can see? Might be worth the trip.

I just don't understand why is there a big problem with Obama coming to College Station? Not everyone in College station is against Obama. I really like our new president and what he stands for. No one said anything about the former President, when he lied about the weapons of mass destruction. Apparently your vote didn't count in the election, because he's president, and that is the way it is, except or go on publicizing untrue facts about him. America did not get into this recession overnight or within the months he's been president. Please read your facts and get educated, before you publish untrue facts. President Obama has not been given a chance to prove himself; he was set as a failure in some of your mines the day he was elected!!Give him a chance to straighten up this mess!!It's got to be hard for him as a president inheriting all the problems and stress.

Oh, and let's not forget that for Obama, community service=community organizing and community organizing = ACORN, HCFAN, SEIU... I hope my fellow Aggies do give him the welcome he so deserves. HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

For all of you who wanting to put politics aside and jest get along, when we all stop going to the polls to elect people to represent us, you can put politics aside. As for showing Obama respect, well that is a two way street, and he seems to be on a one way road.

I am wondering how much longer O'bama and followers plan to make excuse of not having enough time yet and to blame the former president for O'bama failure to accomplish something--anything so far. How easy to blame others but relying on the blaming others and failing to take responsibility for one's own action or lack thereof proves an inability to lead.

Anonymous, I would assume because Houston is between New Orleans and here and Austin is not. See below: "NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- President Obama will visit New Orleans on Thursday for the first time since taking office, to address rebuilding efforts in the city ravaged by Hurricane Katrina four years ago." http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/10/15/obama.new.orleans/index.html
