A rally scheduled for Monday evening in Hearne, was publicly billed as a time to mobilize and organize Hearne's black population. The featured speaker was Quanell X, Houston leader of the New Black Panther Party. Over the weekend, the church that volunteered to host the rally told the group to find a new location.

It's the latest twist in what has become a contentious relationship between the Robertson County District Attorney's office and a group of relatives of Hearne murder victims.

The rally was scheduled to take place Monday evening at St. Mary's Catholic church.

Father Robert Herald said he originally agreed to the use of church space, when he was contacted by Sandy Johnson. Johnson is a Houston area woman whose son was murdered in Hearne last year. No arrests have been made in the case, and her son's body is set to be exhumed and sent to Dallas. She claims the Robertson County D.A.'s office fumbled the case.

According to Herald, Johnson pitched the gathering as a prayer meeting, and Herald only later learned Quanell X, the activist leader, would be the featured speaker.

Herald said he made the decision to call off the meeting this weekend, after someone with the D.A.'s office provided him with more information on Quanell X.

"I then realized, looking at this narrative and looking at the bio sketch, that I was dealing with a rather hardcore veteran of the nation of Islam," said Herald.

A group, Herald said he didn't want anyone to assume St. Mary's agreed with or was trying to promote.

By phone Monday, Sandy Johnson said she hoped to reschedule the rally after finding a new location.

In an interview last week, Quanell X said Hearne and Robertson County have a history of injustices against minorities.

Robertson County D.A. John Paschall responded saying people have stirred the pot on some of the previous criminal cases and made false allegations. He also said his office has continuously worked to solve the murder of Sandy Johnson's son, Hank.
