A Texas man accused of fatally beating a traveler in an apparently random act of violence at a New Jersey highway rest stop is expected in court today.
Authorities say 26-year-old Brian K. White of Humble, Texas, smashed Michail Makarenko's skull with a rock yesterday after Makarenko refused White's offer to sell him religious CDs.
Makarenko, a 75-year-old former Soviet political prisoner, had lived in the United States since 1982. He died at the scene.
White fled and was captured about an hour later 70 miles away after a lengthy pursuit by state troopers.
White is charged with murder, eluding police and weapons charges.
