If you drive in Bryan-College Station, you can't miss all the road construction. Long term, those major projects are expected to alleviate traffic congestion. But right now that roadwork is causing headaches for some drivers at the intersection of FM 2818 and Jones Butler Road in College Station.

They signs prohibiting U-turns are up and visible, but not everyone is obeying.

"The poor barricade. People obviously don't respect it. It's got parts missing where people have probably driven through it or run into it," said Jody Gougler.

Gougler drives through the intersection of Jones Butler and FM 2818 several times a day to get to work and run errands. She's concerned by a trend she's seeing during her commute, people making illegal U-turns, like the driver we caught on camera.

"One day I was in the left lane heading east and someone stopped very abruptly in front of me waiting to make a U-turn. And then, the next day I was in the right lane, a gentleman in front of me in the right lane decided to make a U-turn. And the guy to my left and I both had to slam on our breaks," said Gougler.

Gougler says these incidents prompted her to call police to alert them of what she considers to be an on-going problem. And they're aware and ready to cite violators. The driver we caught on camera was pulled over by police just down the road.

"They're trying to patrol or monitor that area and make sure it's safe. But, you know, they don't have a person they can just put there 24/7. So the drivers need to be more responsible," said Gougler.

Jones Butler Road was originally set to be closed completely.

"We figured this would only increase traffic down at the Rock Prairie area. Since that area is already congested, we didn't want to do that," said Bob Colwell, TxDot spokesman.

Transportation and police officials say they're constantly working on ways to make safety improvements but those changes only work well if people obey the laws.

"What I would like to see is for people to just be aware that it's real dangerous there. And for the people who are choosing to make a U-turn to think twice about it because what they're doing doesn't just affect them," said Gougler.

TxDot engineers and College Station engineers are discussing the intersection, trying to determine what, if any, changes need to be made.
