Sociologist Speaks About Series of Sexual Assaults
It's been days since the eighth attack of who investigators believe is a serial rapist. A person one specialist says is most likely targeting his victims because of their circumstance, not their age.

The latest victim in a series of rapes or attempted sexual assaults is an 88-year-old Centerville woman. She was confronted in her home Saturday morning by a male suspect. Other reports of rapes and attempted sexual assaults have happened in Marlin, Marquez, Bell County, and Lavaca County often in rural neighborhoods. Investigators say all of the victims are over the age of 60, and no one has been able to get a description of the suspect.

Sam Houston State University Sociology professor, Dr. Victoria Titterington said only three percent of the nation's sexual assaults happen to women over the age of 50. Titterington studies the psychological and physical damage that elderly victims experience.

"Older victims of sexual assault in general, the research says it's a much more traumatic incident for them because they do perceive themselves to be more vulnerable. And have in fact been physically attacked and they feel that lack of protection," said Dr. Victoria Titterington.

Dr. Titterington said elderly victims of sexual assaults often feel as though they don't have the same level of social support as that which is available to younger victims.

Investigators said in each case of the rapes or attempted sexual assaults phone lines were cut a month prior to the home intrusion.

"This person may not be motivated to, 'I want to rape older women or I want to rob older women,' but these older women happen to live alone in, what I gather are, rural settings so not only is there not anyone in their homes but their may not be anybody nearby from other homes," said Dr. Titterington.

Monday at 6:30 p.m. a public meeting will be held at the Leon County Courthouse to discuss the attacks.

The phone lines do not remain cut for the entire month.........it's as if this is a trial he does prior to the actual night of the attack when he cuts the phone lines AGAIN. That is why they asked for anyone to report their phone lines having been cut in the last year.

I agree. I'm sorry, I just don't think it's a coincidence that ALL 8 of these women are elderly. This guy is suggesting he's not after elderly women but people who are alone. He's suggesting the guy's just having weird luck that his intended rape victims just happen to be over 60. I am curious though about the phone lines being cut a month prior. Do these women go months at a time without a phone call and not notice?
