School administrators at Milam Elementary School in Bryan made a shocking discovery Friday morning. A 9-year-old fourth grader brought an unloaded .25 caliber handgun to the school in a backpack.
The student told classmates he wanted to show the gun to friends. Another student reported the incident to a teacher, who immediately removed the fourth grader and the backpack from the classroom.
Possessing a firearm on school property is is an automatic expellable offense for students over the age of 10. But, according to the Texas Education Code, when a student under the age of ten engages in behavior considered to be expellable, the student will not be expelled, but will be placed in a District Alternative Education Program (DAEP). The length of DAEP placement is at the discretion of the campus principal and can range from 15 days to the remainder of the school year.
Bryan Police are investigating the incident.

My children know about guns and have been taught to respect them. We are not saying that guns should go away, but they should not be in a child's hands without adult supervision. We have guns in our home, but they are locked up and my children cannont access them without an adult. Guns shouldn't be in school period!! It is hard for me to believe that this nine year old didn't know not to bring guns to school. I know that parents have to sign a code of conduct each year at the beginning of school and this is explictly explained. I also know the children have to sign it too. This child should be expelled. He broke the rules.... period.

To Ennis---it was a gun that stopped the local serial rapist the other night. It was not a long winded pep ralley speach by OBAMA THE ENTERTAINER. I might think about giving up my guns when all the violent criminals are gone.

My children know about guns, they used them under supervision. Guns are a part of every boy's life (wether it is a real gun or a toy one) The truth is a 9 year old child should not have the need, nor the permission from his parents to carry a gun anywhere. Parents need to be responsible about their weapons and keeping them out of children's reach should be something done out of common sense. The fault should fall to the parents. It is ignorant to say that Obama will take our guns away. He has not tried to pass any laws to do so. Ibelieve he has more important things to take care of right now. People should and will always own guns in America, it is part of our history. The problem is finding a way to take the guns away from irresponsible hads. Lets face it, we are not all capable of taking in the resposability. It only takes one idiot who is having a nervous breakdown, or is mad at the world and owns a weapon, to unlish destruction and the killing of innocent people.
