Saturday marked the third year Beacon Baptist Church in Bryan hosted a Halloween Carnival. This year the festivities were held at Tanglewood Park. Participants say it's a safe alternative for families to bring their children on Halloween.
"You never know who is really behind the mask because children are so trusting. My children are still 20 and 23 and I'm worried about them tonight," said Rachel Wossun.
Besides making sure the little ones didn't eat too many sweets, another thing parents didn't have to worry about when their children went trick-or-reating was registered sex offenders. Sixty-five registered sex offenders spent Halloween at the Brazos County Adult Probation office. From 6 p.m. to 9.p.m. registered sex offenders on probation attended a meeting during the peak hours of trick-or-treating.
"We're not a threat but some of us are. I'll be honest so it makes me feel safe that I'm here," said a Brazos County registered sex offender. She said she was arrested after she dated a freshman her senior year in high school.
"I wish that the community knew that there are some of us that don't, are not a threat. You can ask any of our probation leaders anyone in the community."
Meanwhile, one parent said having a group of registered sex offenders off the street for one night isn't enough for her to let her guard down.
"We've been in our area for about four or five years. I do and if something comes up, I check," said Bryan resident, Jennifer Boyd.
There are 219 registered sex offenders in Brazos County. Those who are on parole also had to follow Halloween rules They're weren't allowed to leave their home, have a porch light on, or have any Halloween decorations.

Don't let the media and policticians lull you into thinking the streets are safe because sex offenders are locked up one night a year. Show me where in the past 25 years there has been a child abduction on Halloween. But go ahead, lock them up if it makes you feel safer. But also realize the statistics say it is NOT as much the "Stranger Danger" we should worry about as parents - rather it is a relative - stepdad or uncle or grandparent that will molester our children; or a coaches, priest or teacher. By all means know who lives down the street, but also be very aware who is spending ALONE time with your child in YOUR house, in their house, in their classroom - right there in front of you!
There are tons of boys in the State of Texas subject to this same lifelong punishment as this girl is suffering. Boys that are still teens with girls younger than them, in high school with them, girls who lie about their ages and even have fake ids. Girls love having older boyfriends in high school. People, the laws of the State of Texas need to change. There are many sex offenders on the lists in many many counties suffering from this same punishment. I agree that a true child molester or pedophile needs to be punished and they should be made public so they are known in the community. However, a teenage boy does not need to be going through the same punishment and scarlet letter punishment for the rest of his life. Only when we band together as a state can we change some of our ridiculous laws.
This has gotten ridiculous. I know many sex offenders and not one hurt a kid. EVER. The ones that did should be treated differently than the ones that had consensual chat, consensual sex, consensual touching, tinkling on the side of the road or outside your own home and someone spots ya, etc. EVERY ONE of these guys is not a danger but they are all treated exactly the same! Ridiculous why some are even ON the registery to begin with. Read this article: http://forensicpsychologist.blogspot.com/2009/10/halloween-security-theater-endures.html
