Red light cameras in College Station are set to be shut off next Wednesday, according to the city's mayor.
In an e-mail to camera opponent Jim Ash Thursday, Mayor Ben White said city officials have told the cameras' vendor, American Traffic Solutions, to shut off the cameras by noon on Wednesday, November 11.
At 8:30 a.m. that day, the city council will meet to canvass the votes in Tuesday's election, one which saw 52 percent of voters decide to ban red light cameras in the city.
Ash's petition, signed by hundreds of area residents, forced a proposition to be added to the November ballot.
Citations will continue to be given to drivers who run red lights while the cameras are on.
Mayor White will be live on Brazos Valley This Morning Wednesday to discuss this issue, just hours before the meeting to canvass the votes.

HandyMcdandy, revenue is what keeps your lights and water running, so why don't you get a clue, revenue keeps your streets up to a high standard, revenue keeps the sewer from being in your back yard instead of a treatment plant, revenue keeps your city safe by hiring Police and Fire. So wrong buddy, revenue is required to keep the city running to the high standards that the Citizens expect from the CIty Government. So I will get a clue if you do. Revenue keeps your kids safe going to school, the city could remove those police officers that give tickets in schools zones, or those traffic guards or those handy dandy do not walk/walk signs. The problem once again is you don't understand what it takes to keep business running, looks like you think everything is free.
If American Traffic Solutions is a publicly traded company it might not be a bad idea to pick up a few shares of their stock. They stood to make over 11 million from their 20 year contract with Ben White and the College Station city council. Houston, Garland and several other Texas cities still have cameras. I heard that Boston is about to install them in the near future.
if you increase the yellow by one second, drivers will know they have an two extra seconds to get through the intersection instead of that extra second to apply the brake and NOT run the red light. it isn't the cameras, it isn't the red lights, it is poor driving habits and haste. if you don't have the extra 90 seconds to wait for the light to turn green, you should have left a bit earlier.
