Deputies dispatched to check on a family's well being at a house in rural southeast Texas discovered four bodies and Monday San Jacinto County Sheriff James Walters said it appeared that a man fatally shot his girlfriend, her 4-year-old daughter and his adopted mother before killing himself.

Walters said the gunman "might have been off his medication," but he declined to elaborate.

Capt. Carl Jones said the gunman, Oliver Bills Jr., 42, lived at the home with his girlfriend and her child.

The names of those two victims were not immediately released.

Jones said the other victim, Gloria Bills, 71, had a home nearby.

Deputies received a call Saturday night reporting a disturbance and asking for the welfare check.

Jones declined to say who made the call.
