Congressman Chet Edwards spoke Monday about his "no" vote on the House healthcare bill that only passed by three votes late Saturday.

Edwards (D-District 17) said that despite a Congressional Budget Office report that the bill would pay for itself, he was concerned that there was no trigger in the bill to cut off spending if the projections were wrong.

"President Obama called me on Friday, the day before the vote, and in a respectful conversation, I let him know that I could not support the healthcare bill, and that my vote reflected the views of my constituents, and my objections to the level of new spending in it," Edwards said Monday.

The congressman went on to say the House bill had no chance of getting passed in the Senate in its current state.

Edwards was one of 38 Democrats to vote against the House bill. Needing 218 votes to pass, the bill received 220 votes. Only one vote was from a Republican.

Edwards will be among a Congressional delegation that joins the president and top military leaders at tomorrow memorial service. He represented Fort Hood prior to redistricting in 2004.

"Even amidst this terrible tragedy, I believe the world has seen the Fort Hood I know, a special and unique place where the American spirit is alive and well, and where the values of courage, patriotism and service to country are a way of life everyday," Edwards said.

Mr Edwards, all the expenses that WON'T HELP Linda's "poor and middle class" that Linda's worried about are in the bill because YOU put them there in all your earlier votes. And now you're playing the political game with Pelosi who told everyone who wasn't necessary to pass it to suck up to the voters and pontificate about how they were "ALWAYS FOR it before I was ALWAYS AGAINST it" like John Kerry...I fell for that when Cornyn accused you of it last time, but it's not going to happen again.

Chet was given a "Golden Ticket" on the health care vote - he was told by Pelosi that his vote wasn't needed to pass the bill, do he didn't have to vote for it in order to protect himself against angry voters in his district. As far as Fort Hood goes - its time to eliminate the political correctness that allows suspicious people's actions to be overlooked because of their race or religion.

Chet got permission to vote no because his vote wasn't needed. He easily could have gone the other way. He refused to state his position throughout this debate.
