A U.S. official says the Fort Hood shooting suspect reached out to communicate with a radical imam overseas who came under scrutiny in the past for possible links to terror groups.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the
person was not authorized to discuss the investigation, says Nidal
Malik sent electronic communications to Anwar al Awlaki. Awlaki
writes a blog which, among other things, denounces U.S. policies as
anti-Muslim.

The official says the messages were picked up by U.S.
counter-terrorism officials, but that an inquiry into the matter was
shelved because the contacts were not deemed to suggest a threat.
Investigators are trying to determine whether Nidal has any links
to terror groups.

No one seems to be asking why he reached out to someone from the other side. Was he asking for help dealing with spiritual problems that could not be asked about in the military and if so why couldn't they? If the news stories are correct the military seems to be relying solely on psychiatrists for mental health help. Why no reports of crisis intervention training for all soldiers as a part of their basic training? If civilians can be trained to work hotlines as volunteers and help people over the phone why can't soldiers be trained with the same training programs with no duty requested of them? Just give them the training so that they have it to use if needed and never ask if they use it. Training is training available when needed. Why aren't social workers trained in crisis management and negotiations and medical case work available with many duties helping families and if they happen to counsel someone for ptsd it is just part of the job not even required to be reported.
