After a month-long jury selection, the capital murder trial of a Huntsville inmate accused of killing a prison guard, has begun in Leon County.
Prison officials said Jerry Martin and another inmate killed prison guard Susan Canfield as they escaped from the Wynne Unit in September of 2007.
Police said Martin and the inmate stole a vehicle on prison grounds then rammed the truck into Canfield's horse. She was thrown from the horse and killed.
Martin then fled to the woods, but was captured hours later. Both he and the other man had been serving time for murder related charges.
